No sane thief would be using a stolen credit card to pay a fee for a game. So why indeed? Anyone got any clues?

Yes and no. Turbine is the developer of DDO and LOTRO and they also run the american servers. But Turbine has a contract with Codemasters, so Codemasters run the european servers of DDO and LOTRO.
