Laura Genender (condolences to her friends and family) wrote:

Vanguard makes a good game a couple hours a day, or only a couple days a week, but hardcore play or long-term play just aren't options, yet.”

She is right, in a way. Where she uses the word ‘yet’ I would replace it with ‘anymore’.

The one thing most MMO gamers seem to to do, myself included, is compare their game to WoW and wonder, if down the line their game will sell-out and try to become more like the WoW monster. In Vangaurd’s case the answer, unfortunately – Is a very big yes.

Vanguard has sold out and gone the path of simplifed game mechanics, easier leveling curve and in game ‘help’ items that by in large trivialize the challenge of a fantasy MMO while taking away the feeling of accomplishment, and replacing it with instant gratification.

This is clearly documented in Vanguard’s exit poll, which asks the following:

What led you to quit?

It was too difficult to level.
It was too difficult to move around.
It was too difficult to find quests.
It was too difficult to get a mount.
It was too difficult to get a house/boat.

It is loaded ‘polls’ like the above that insult the average gamer, and are offered not to actually gauge why players are leaving, but to justify the one-way vision of the games developers.

The community has tried to stem the tide. In this thread members cried out to not have the development team’s new idea of Bikini armor implemented

In this thread (originated by lead dev.Silius) members overwhelmingly supported the idea of a server with Vanguard’s original rule-set. 26 pages of /signed. The thread was then killed by the staff with nothing but a very odd explanation.

In this thread the community once again begged for an original rule-set server (6 months later). The thread was locked.

In this thread members discuss the possibility that Vanguard has undergone a slow motion NGE.

In this poll the community overwhelmingly voted to remove the Bind on Pick-up tag for loot (bind on pick-up made it so you couldn’t sell gear that was dropped by monsters.) The change was not implemented, and only the less desirable ‘blue’ items were re-tagged as being able to be sold.

The above is indisputable and is a matter of fact. Vanguard has sold out.

The developers and rabid fanbois (all 9 of them) use words like ‘tedium’ to justify the changes. Sadly, what they don’t realize is that having everything handed to you, or getting everything with little to no effort is just as tedious, if not more so – Than having to ‘grind’.

Vanguard’s attempt to be something it was never intended to be (casual wanna be WoW with slightly deeper PVE) is it’s failing.

Aside from the ‘easy street’ mentality, long standing bugs still abound.

  • Players still fall through the world
  • The command ‘/stuck yes’ is still in game since beta
  • The reigns on camel mounts still show as upside down and backwards
  • Several classes still have skills and abilities that do nothing
  • 2 handed weapons still do not do x2 damage on critical hits.

The list is so long in fact that it’s almost pointless to continue, but trust me – I could.

It should also be noted that Vanguard's producer, Phathom aka Thom Terrazas, has not addressed the Vanguard community for over 8 months.  And as of July,  is apparently too busy to even post his own producers letter.

MMORPG’s own writer Fatebringer aka J Anderson will soon be writing about PVP in Vangaurd. That should be an interesting read since PVP within Vanguard has not been touched since the game was released.

Vanguard: Saga of Heros = Death by the slow and consistent loss of meaning.

The coroner’s report will read: Self Inflicted.

What he said is true and you can find similar discussion in Vanguard´s official forum.

Why do you belive he is trolling? He didnt lied, he used good arguments...

You may disagree with the OP, but what he said is supported by Vanguard´s players that enjoyied the original game concept.

Amen,

The game still has potential and is sorta fun still, but since beta, the only thing I only noticed changed is slight framerate improvement.

Now waiting for the beta servers to go up Friday for WAR heh, sorry SoE, you fail at failing.

i didnt take time at all to even read any of the posts here cause im lazy and fat and sweaty.  so there. vangaurd is actually a great game now. play on seradon's server theres actually a lot of people. its not hard to move its just like any other game. theres tons of options and possiblitlies with things to do. theres still bugs and crap but not as bad as launch. and you can play without crashing at all now. most of the community is badass to unlike most games were everyone is a douche. id still be playing VG right now if my g/f's computer didnt suck so much ass.

remember that one time in Tursh when we had a pizza party and high fived each other until the sun went down?

Well he created the account just for this post, he tries to argue with some valid arguments mixed with a lot of spin.

Check for youself the links, its a time-range from february 2008 until today and most of the links lead to threads where you find the usual discussions in such games.

" to stem the tide" "cried out" "overwhelmingly supported" "killed by" "begged for " "overwhelmingly voted"  and so on. That sounds like out of the rainbow press.

Than a passage about fanbois to make sure he gets some angry replies.

No sorry, that looks pretty trollish to me.  This will be my only post in this thread.

> The reigns on camel mounts still show as upside down and backwards

Made me laugh.

Whoa Vespers!

Did I hit a nerve? It’s ok…let it all out. Although I expect your next post to be written in all caps, k?

Seriously, I didn’t make anything up. The proof is in the links. Click them and read.

I don't get the big deal about my registration date. If I have something to say I have to post, to post - I must register. It just happened that day was today.

Is this a numerology thing?

Check it   The author registered on this board 7/31/08. His post in that thread was his first. Kinda odd how that it is. Did you ravage him with troll comments and speculation about the day his account was created?

Or is it more that you just don't like what I have to say?

Cynical? Me? Never.

Although, VG is a nice game it wasn't what it promised to be; a true sequel to EQ. Solo play is expected and encouraged while group play is just there. Why even add group mobs and quest? To torment me? I hate games that do this. EQ2 and WoW are the exact same way. Choose one or the other NOT BOTH! You can't have your cake and eat it, too. Whoops, I went on a little rant.

I'm saying that VG was suppose to bring back interdependency and forced grouping. It hasn't. Its a WoW clone that failed even at that. The only true grouping game out is DDO, and they went and screwed that up by having it all instances.

How many EQ people are left that still want harsh features? SoE does what it has to in order to get subs. People hate death penalties, corpse runs, long play hours to get somewhere, forced grouping, long travel times, etc. Rightfully so, that stuff doesn't make a game more fun, it makes it more annoying. I like VG a lot but the last time I played I had just came back from WoW with some friends and to be honest I eventually quit after some unnecessary corpse runs and experience loss. I play games to relax and have fun. When you die and lose experience and have to run to get your corpse to get your things back or you lose a lot more exp, it doesn't make me happy when it is all said and done.

You don't achieve anything more, its just a bunch of time sinks that slow down having fun. You just have to get that stuff back and redo what you already did. People don't want that anymore and now that there are options from EQ, why would anyone want to go back to that old school thinking? I loved the golden days of UO and EQ but c'mon, the newer games are more fun and a lot less stressful.

Personally I like what they have done to the game.  I agree it is a bit too easy to level esp at lower levels but thats why I use that wonderful no xp buf :).  At any rate I like the things they have done in general and find that the economy is pretty well balanced esp between crafted and adventuring rewards.  I tend to go back and forth between crafted equipment and adventuring loots.  I find it is best to hire a crafter to make stuff though as there are so many options for crafted gear and if you order exactly what you want it really can't be beat.

In any event I'm enjoying the game quite a lot and thing they have made some great decisions that improve the fun of the game while getting rid of some of the tediousness.  It is easy to get around and get groups.   Dungeons are great and plentiful.  Combat system is outstanding.  Even the quests are better then most games.  And of course the world is without peer being large and diverse.

There are a few bugs still but nothing other then minor irritants easily bypassed.

All in all I support the direction the devs are going with the game and I vote my support each month with my subscription :)
