    • Possible Lag fix for some

I also came across that or something very similar a while ago & it definitely helped me for a while too.

After the last couple of patches though, scenarios seemed to start getting more laggy again & the new Reikland factory was a well rendered but thoroughly unplayable slideshow.

I finally resolved the issue by buying a new PC & now have no lag whatsoever. A bit drastic I know, but I had been meaning to upgrade for a while as my old machine was really starting to show it's age & had problems with several games despite upgrading it with a decent card & lots of Ram last year.  Probably the main issue was still being 'Single Core', but it could also have been the Nvidia 8800GTS card as the drivers allegedly cause performance issues in quite a few games.

My new rig is 'Vista 64 Quad Core' with an ATI card & so far I haven't had any issues at all. I still think that my old one should have been able to play it reasonably well, but it doesn't really matter anymore.

It's just as well MMOs are cheap though as I won't be able to afford to go 'out on the town' for a while.

    • mmorpgs are complete rip offs
    • If everyone keeps complaining that new MMOs are released before they are finished then surely that would make them 'Incomplete Rip Offs".

Seriously though, compared to most other forms of adult entertainment they are ridiculously good value for money & the monthly subscription of most MMOs would barely last half an hour in a London Pub!

Micro-transaction MMOs are another matter entirely though & I avoid those on principle as they seem too much like playing 'One Armed Bandit Gambling Machines'.

    • Do any MMOs make you feel like a hero?
    • Not sure about feeling like a Hero, or Villain for that matter since I usually play on the Evil side.

MMOs fall under the little fish in overpopulated pond category, i.e. if everyone is special then no-one is.

I would settle for a game that made me feel like a person rather than a generic class/race stereotype. Most NPCs tend to give the same cliched reactions depending on how effort the developers put into creating player customised dialog. That's why things like player housing are imporant, even if you can't make much of an impression on the environment or the NPCs, at least you can still have your own place.

In one of my favourite STNG episodes '11001001', the AI 'Minuette' that has a wonderful conversation with Picard where he compliments her on enhancing their interaction with knowledge about his cultural origins & she explains that even while they speak she is simulataneously accessing his personal files.

I don't expect MMOs to become as sophisticated as 'Minuette' for quite a while, but it would be nice to find a game where you didn't just feel like just another face in the crowd.

      Just my opinion of course.

    • DC Universe or Champions Online?

Sounds like a good plan & that's the approach I will probably take as well.

I have read comics all my life & the most enjoyable are the ones with great distinctive artists. Jim Lee is responsible for most of the in-game artwork on DCUO so it should be a great visual experience. I am not so sure how they will manage the interaction with core DC characters without it looking to cheezy, but I look forward to being pleasantly surprised. Hopefully the folks at DC will be keeping a close eye on SOE.

I also used to play a lot of pen & paper RPGs when I was a student & Champions was one of the best respected Superhero genre games. I only played it a few times at a local club, but it was great fun.

I did download the free trial for CoX last year, but even though I thought it looked like a great game, I just couldn't get into it that much. I still get tempted to pick it up every time I see it in my local 'GAME' store for only £9.99 though.

A well executed superhero MMO with decent RPG aspects would probably be my ideal game, so with both DCUO & CO coming out soon 2009 should be an interesting year.

    • This Editorial explains exactly what I think is wrong with Warhammer.
    • Good article, thanks for posting it.

Being on a better populated server really does make a difference, but even then there still seems to be too many people that are just scenario grinding.

I think most of the required game elements are there, but as the article suggests many people either don't really notice or just go for the easy option of queuing for scenarios all the time.

It's still early days yet though & provided they don't take too long about it, there is still time for Mythic to find the right balance. Every other MMO I have played has changed a hell of a lot in the first six months after release, so I guess the old saying about "The best laid plans of Mice & Men" is true once again.
