You might look around at your account setup. I'm not sure you need to buy the full game via digital download. You might be able to go into the account you created with the trial and upgrade it. I buddy of mine recently did this and was able to do with without buying the digital download... Anyway I'm not sure what he did but I thought I'd mention it as there might be something there that will save you a bit.
One thing you might try is turning off other background programs. Every time I've had crashing problems with eq2 it has turned out to be caused by xfire. I'm not sure why but one time I had to completely reinstall xfire then the problem went away... Anyway thought I'd toss that out. I run on a quad core with vista 64 and I never crash.
A dev posted something about this issue on the forums. Apparently the problem is caused by garbage collection. Some change caused an increase in memory usage and when VG tries to allocate more memory then is available the game crashes to the desktop. To prevent this they more agressively set the garbage collection. They check for memory at 90% every second. If it is 90% or more they do a garbage collection which causes lag. The garbage collection can happen every 10 seconds. It was every 30 minutes.
Apparently sound can be a big memory hog for systems without any hardware sound accelleration. So turning off sound saves you memory which cause the game to not run out of memory and not need to garbage collect and hence the lag becomes infrequent. You could also decrease the texture resolution and have a similar effect.
Anyway the dev said they are looking into it and will probably set the garbage collection to N minutes instead of 10 seconds.
Some hitching is normal in a new area for the first time. Maybe you just need to run around a bit and it will smooth out.

Generally the best gear is dropped on raids, so looted.
There is a small exception and that are dropped recipes on raids. With those recipes you can craft better weapons (as example) as the usual raidmob drops.
Also there are atm new cratedrops on shores of darkness which let you craft new high level equipment. Not sure how good those is, the area is new.
There are 4 caster classes.
Necromancer - the only real petclass
Sorcerer - Heavy Nuker, not much crowd control.
Druid - Nukes and a ton of different utility, which stops working on raids.
Psi - Nukes and a lot of utility, also usable on raids.
From the caster the sorc is probably weakest solo.
And I want to mention that you can raid as a casual too. For example in the raid Im in, there are people which can only play to 11pm, some can only raid 2 times a week, some have childs, some have aggro girl/boyfriends which force them to leave and so on...
Sorry but there are two real pet classes..1 necro 2 shamen.
there are 4 other classes that have pets that can help fight also.
Druids have some pets that are not controllable but can be handly.
Rangers now have pets that can help out by tanking some for them.
Psionists have an illusion type spell that creates a pet that the target tanks while they can cast spells. Psionists can also charm and make creatures into temporary pets.
Bards can also charm and create a temporary pet. Only 15 seconds but still a great help when you are trying to fight a small group.
What is your favourite Mage archetype class in Age of Conan?
