So warhammer was not as much of a let down as AoC, however it does seem to have a curve that simply makes the game feel boring as you go. I find myself not making time to play it. And when I do have time I tend to gravitate to more thought provoking or challenging games. Scenarios were fun at because they were new but as each side has learned tactics for guaranteed wins. It's just not that interesting. The PVE elements which i warned were not up to snuff never came about. The story and lore elements were fluff and nothing more. They spent so much time perfect balance and PvP they forgot to make the game meaningful. Most people are not leaving due to a lack of content or lack of quality its a lack of purpose and replayability. With AoC people left because they were angry that a good game was poorly managed. With warhammer they are leaving cause they are simply bored.
While I have not left and still level my characters its more of a "what the hell I got nothing better to do." moment then a "sorry honey go to bed without me I want to stay up and play a little more." If there was something anything that put some meaning behind anything you do it would feel like I am accomplishing something. As is you gain a level go to the next area and grind that area and so on. The world is so linear its almost suffocating. I want to explore and go to places far off the beaten trail. But if you try you end up finding invisible walls and water that apparently can steal your breath and kill you in seconds. Whats the point of creating a virtual world that forces you along a set path. There is nothing story wise to push me to the next tier or to go to and explore other zones the only motivating factor is to reach the level cap.
I wanted more of a story this is a great IP and deserves better attention to the lore. The PvP is to repetitive and often you feel like it's all pointless. Perhaps if they set the keeps to become challenged on a timer that once captured its yours for 9 hours or something then the other faction has a chnace to cap it again. But as is you log off after fighting back the order and decide it's time to go to bed. Only to wake up and find you have to do it all over again. That gets really old really quickly.
Anyways that's my peace said. Lets hope for AoC and War to improve and become the games they should have been from the start.
The funniest thing about all these posts is everyone forgets that when a company like Blizzard set out to make an mmo everyone thought they were going to fail, the art was bad the game was going to be for kiddies, blah blah blah.... Well.
Several billions of dollars later they are still the kings. A company that had only made RTS and single player hack and slashers made the single most successful MMO in history. So a little company called bioware which happened to make probably the single best star wars IP game ever with KoToR, get's their hands on the star wars IP again and decides this time to take a swing at an MMO using what they have learned from years of building some of the best console and PC RPG's on the market. And the only company who has even a glimmer of a chance to truely pull off a story driven game.
I say go for it. If they pull off anything remotely like KoToR with multiplayer I will be happy. If they can keep the stories coming and give me 1000's of ways to keep being the hero for years to come I will gladly give them my $20. I enjoy the sandbox games heck i grew up on them. I was a WoW naysayer back in the day.. *eats crow*
Success in this industry is not measured by player satisfaction but in subscription numbers. Some of the happiest player bases for games like Ryzom *sandbox* failed miserably. Went out of business.
Which is why there are so many sandbox lovers on these forums. All the games they love and played have all fallen off the map. They feel that because what they love is not commercially viable due to all the *themepark* games success they will never have the games they truely want with the populations they need to keep a game alive.
There have been many great sandbox games mostly for more of us diehards who grew up with that style of game int he early years of MMO. But with WoW's success and were not talking a minor success we are talking massive success the business world took notice and the days of indy house MMO's catering to a devoted few is long long gone.
Now these people rage against the machine of commerce that has left them with no game to call home and any title that is viewed as a sellout will be attacked and trashed to justify their hatred for the commercialization that has destroyed the genre they so loved.
I was there once, I swallowed my pride when my brother gave me a WoW sub a few years ago and I tried it out. To my surprise I had fun. was it easy? Yes. But this die hard sandbox guy was softened up and found that I could have fun soloing and getting killed a 1000 times and not lose anything but some change on a repair bill. That I could mindlessly enjoy a story instead of bashing my head in trying to find people to help me make my own.
As the world of MMO's has become mainstreamed our sandbox homes have become a thing of legend. We can either end up grump old men crying about how when we were kids if you died in an MMO you might as well create a new toon since you would have to start all over again anyways. Or we can grow and change with the times and find things we love about what the new games offer. But if you insist on holding onto what was and not accept that which is. You are going to end up like that grumpy old bugger that nobody wants to care for and ends up alone in a home for the elderly with no friends sitting in the corner mummering to yourself about how if they just made a sandbox MMO they would see.
They made them for years... I played them all.... They never did anywhere near as good as the crappy mainstream games we get today. Get over it they won we lost. I look forward to the promise of darkfall, may it be everything they claim and may it get sub numbers to keep it alive long enough for me to die and lose everything at least 3 times.
Poor america always the whipping boy of the world when thing go wrong but no credit for what we do right. The most generous nation in the world providing more aid monetary or otherwise to all nations in need. We provide more civilian volunteers than any other country. We do more good in the world than most of the rest of the world and yet people can only dwell on what we do wrong. Yes we are not perfect but I would rather make mistakes trying to do right than to do nothing at all.
To be honest this was my main complaint during closed beta. It was severly lacking polish. They put so much time and effort into PvP the rest of the game was almost slapped together. It lacks that touch you get when something was created lovingly. If I didn't know any better it was as if the game was built by people who love PvP but simply loath PvE.
what they fail to mention is how absolutely squishy squig herders are. We have some big hits if you stack ballistic gear like mad. But you will find yourself the primary target mostly because the order see's a squig as a free kill. So take my advice and if they come running sticky them and beat it the hell out of there.
my guild already has 3 level 40's so its not impossible. Just depends on your determination and desire. Plus skipping around between the race areas once you clear one of quests move to the same tier for another race and start at the beginning you can rack up xp quickly that way.
