No, I'm not talking about my first awkward experience in the realm of sex (probably because I was drunk and don't remember it at all). I'm talking about my first MMO. I remember the excitement and the brave new world I was experiencing. I remember meeting new people online. I also remember my first ganking as a lowbie and my first pk death. I remember being a little pissed off and excited at the same time being killed by another player.
I guess you could say that I came to the MMO genre later than some. My first MMO was Lineage 2. When it first started, the game was great. There were plenty of players, the combat was great, the graphics were awesome. The quests were a little boring, but I didn't care. I was venturing into a new world. I remember spending endless nights playing Lineage 2. I would come home from work and immediately jump online. I forgot about food on many occassions and all I wanted to do was join my friends in some fun. I really enjoyed the world of Lineage 2 and looking back, I really liked the PVP style. Although, at the time, it was a bit frustrating having open PVP, but it gave a sense of realism. Wherever I went, there was the possiblity of death.
I don't play Lineage 2 anymore. The game became a time sink, not to mention the rampant botting, farmers, etc. I just wasn't having as much fun anymore. So I decided to look into other MMO's. I tried WoW, Tabula Rasa, AoC, several free MMO's, and probably a few others I can't think of at the moment. Nothing so far has given me the feeling that I had when I first started playing Lineage 2.
This has got me thinking. Will there ever be any MMO that will give me the same feeling as my first? Are my standards to high? Am I being picky?
I'm sure that other people have experienced this. What was your resolution? Did you find an MMO that generated those same feelings? Did you lower your expectations and standards?
This feeling reminded me a lot of the feeling you get when you first fall in love. You'll always remember your first love.
So, was your first MMO experience like your first love: something you'll never forget and something you will compare all other loves to? Or was your first MMO experience like losing your viriginity: awkward, disappointing, short, and something you'd probably rather not remember?
I have full faith in BioWare's abilities to make a great game. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of their games (Mass Effect being the most recent and my favorite) and IMO are the best developers when it comes to RPGs. I know that MMO's are different than single player RPG's but I'm sure BioWare will get it right, no matter what it is.

DDO and LOTRO have free trials. Start there and make your own decision.
Not sure if Vanguard has a free trial. If it does I'd give it a try myself.
PS. I love LOTRO, but ymmv.
VG doesn't have a trial yet, but it's coming soon. The trial island is on the test server at the moment, so it is coming.
To the OP, I don't have any experience with LOTRO or DDO, but I recently tried VG after hearing that it has improved quite a bit since release. I'd definitely recommned it to anyone looking to try a new game. I know I was having a hard time finding a game that I liked. Vanguard has a huge world and the community is very helpful, which is one thing I really like about the game. The combat style is fun (I play a necromancer) and like someone else already mentioned, the crafting and diplomacy is like a separate game in itself.

Kitsune,
Do you play on Seradon? If so, look me up sometime, I have a thing for the hot asian women ;). Rurprekt, lvl 26 sorc. Oh, and have you tried diplomacy?
ROFL, lamesauce
She's actually probably a guy.
I'm currently patching Vanguard and I am a new player. Which server is a good server to join? I enjoy PvP.

I'm really happy with the Guides/GMs in VG.
I recently installed VG again for the first time since launch and made a paladin. I cast smite (or whatever that level 2 spell is), got the mob and someone else killed it. Not worrying about it, sense it's not unusual in an MMO... but then someone told me sorry, and I noticed it was a GM who KSd me?! I was like, "no big deal", but he/she felt bad, gave me an illusion and aplogized again....
So very strange to see that from anyone, let alone a GM... Maybe I will come back...
that's actually refreshing to hear, I've been looking for a new MMO and I think I may try Vanguard now since it seems that thing have improved.
