A Rougelite Fisticuffs Called Absolum Revealed By Streets of Rage 4 Devs

Dotemu and Guard Crush Games unveiled a trailer for new beat em up Absolum, and a new type of fantasy fighter.

The studio that took us to the mean streets for a brawl or two is going all dark fantasy. The Streets of Rage 4 devs just unveiled a new fantasy fighter that takes the traditional mechanics of 90s beat emu pa and melds it with a dash of roguelike and a hint of magic. Players won’t be knee-deep in gang warfare on this escapade. Instead, they’ll fight as the outcast heroes of Talamh in a fierce battle to retake magic from Sun King Azra. For us, that means a cool aesthetic and some new ideas for a team that already know how to handle this genre.

Touted as a mix of top-of-the-class combat action and modern roguelite elements, this adventure pops players into a magical realm, besieged and left in ruins. From the shadows of this world come, Galandra, Karl, Brome, and Cider. Four powerful but very different warriors who bring a unique mix of ideas to the scrolling battle. Swing a massive sword and wield Necormatic powers or skirmish up close to take down powerful enemies and Elite guards. Build up a mix of rapid combo chains and spells in rapid succession, while using magical counters to turn the tide of battle. Absolum is set to offer up a diverse combat system that requires skill and timing to bludgeon your way through, with the promise of multiple and a range of unpredictable encounters along the way.

While we don’t have much more than the trailer and a Steam Store page to take a glance at yet, this move away form the mean city streets is somewhat refreshing. The idea of diverging upgrade paths, randomized loot, and branching questlines all intertwined into a well-honed combat system and an unexpected lore is a compelling one. You can check out more on Absolum and Wishlist it now.
