ESO Shared an Update on the Warden and Class Refresh

The ESO development team shared an update on the ongoing Warden and Class refresh work. Over the last year, the team shared updates on the Class Identity and the Refresh initiative, paying particular attention to the Dragonknight class as well as the Werewolf abilities. In the latest blog post, the team shares an update on where the Warden refresh stands and why the plans have shifted.

“We know many of you are curious about when the Warden abilities will be refreshed, and we are still working hard to determine when we can get it into your hands. Rest assured that planning and work on the Warden is still underway, though the recent studio letter from Nick Giacomini still reflects our current roadmap. “

From the beginning, the team set out to strengthen the class fantasy and better connect the gameplay to themes that make the Warden class feel unique. The goal is to make the class more cohesive, distinctive and rewarding to play. The pillars of the Warden class include:

  • Nature magic
  • Animals
  • Ice-themed abilities
  • Clear identity as protector of the natural world

And they will remain central to the class. What the devs are changing is how these themes connect and express through gameplay, building upon the foundation that is already there. Here are the problem spots to tackle:

  • The Warden currently lacks a unified visual identity and theme.
  • The Warden’s skill lines are role-centralized, reducing their effectiveness when attempting to utilize their entire kit.
  • Wardens lack a unique mechanic to their kit that all roles can engage with.

In order to do so, the team is piloting away from Morrowind-specific visuals and instead ensures that the class’s abilities reflect all playstyles and are present in every skill line. Additionally, the team wants to Provide more interesting gameplay loops and strengthen the mechanical feel. Last but not least, ensure the Warden’s core visual themes are all preserved, while also spreading those visual themes across abilities for every playstyle.

The next refresh will aim for the Sorcerer. Check out the blog post to find out more.
