Smart glasses have spent years stuck between two extremes: overly futuristic prototypes that nobody would wear in public, or basic audio glasses that barely feel “smart” at all. Google, Samsung, and fashion eyewear brand Gentle Monster are now trying to change that equation with a new line of AI-powered intelligent eyewear revealed during Google I/O 2026.
The upcoming Gentle Monster intelligent eyewear collection blends Samsung’s hardware engineering with Google’s Gemini AI platform, wrapped inside frames that almost look runway-ready. The first designs shown at I/O lean heavily into Gentle Monster’s signature oversized, fashion-forward aesthetic rather than the bulky tech-first look that has haunted smart glasses for years.
Underneath the designer frames, though, there is still plenty of tech packed inside. The glasses feature built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras, allowing users to listen to music, make calls, snap photos, and interact directly with Google Gemini using voice commands. Google is pitching the glasses as an “in-the-moment assistant” designed to help users stay engaged with the world around them rather than staring at a phone screen.
That means asking for turn-by-turn navigation while walking through a city, receiving live language translations during conversations, or getting contextual information about nearby locations. Google also says Gemini can handle more advanced requests, including editing photos or placing delivery orders through voice interaction alone.
The partnership itself is just as exciting as the tech. Samsung brings years of expertise in wearable and mobile hardware, while Google provides the AI backbone through Gemini. Gentle Monster, meanwhile, supplies something the smart glasses market has consistently lacked: actual fashion credibility.
Wearables only become mainstream if people genuinely want to wear them every day. Smartwatches succeeded because they evolved into fashion accessories as well as fitness tools. Earbuds became lifestyle products as much as audio devices. Smart glasses have struggled because many consumers simply do not want to look like they are beta testing the future at the grocery store.
Gentle Monster’s involvement suggests Google and Samsung understand that reality. The first collection of intelligent audio glasses is expected to launch later this fall, with additional designs planned as part of the broader collaboration. Pricing and full technical specifications have not yet been revealed.
