Gothic Remake – Your Choices Will Define the Journey

Gothic Remake - Your Choices Will Define the Journey

Alkimia Interactive’s lead game designer shared new details about the Gothic Remake during an interview at Barcelona Game Fest. Javier Untoria uncovered some facts about the development, and this time it was about the role-play system of the game. The team has ambitious plans to implement the flexible choice system, where players’ decisions matter and shape the journey.

“For the way of playing, we want to add and give choices for the player. Like, they can play as they want, so we improve the combat, the magic, and all the ranged combat. So our idea is, okay, this is an action RPG in an open world, so the player can go wherever, talk whenever, all the decisions make matters in the game…we are going in that direction to give the most variety of options to the players.” – lead game designer Javier Untoria.

Taking into account that they are working with the open world RPG, the team decided that the players need as much freedom as they can give them. Thus, first and foremost, they improved the battle system, including magic and ranged attacks. However, in the modern age, it’s not enough, and the next focus became the role-play and dialogue choices. Javier said that they wanted to give more options for the players on how they want to proceed through the game. For example, he explained that players can choose to lie to an NPC and find an alternative path to complete a quest, or they can follow a more classic approach. The decisions players make will affect the story and the relationships with the characters.

Considering the limited influence of the player’s choices in the original game. Gothic Remake seems to go in the right direction. Adding more immersion and expanding the role-play, the team breathes new life into the old classic. However, that might both create a unique nostalgic experience or create a completely new experience with faint ties to the original. To find out how it unraveled in the end, we’ll have to wait until the release.

Gothic Remake comes to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in Q1 2026.
