Developer Spiders is back with a new blog post dedicated to the upcoming RPG GreedFall 2: The Dying World. Previously, the team spoke about companions, confirming the presence of romances and long personal quest chains. This time, the center of attention is the VFX (visual effects) and the magical touch it adds to the game.
Per the developers’ words, VFX are created in response to design, scenery and illustration needs, and will often go through a reflective thought process before being produced to make them coherent in the universe. The latest blog post allows you to pull the veil off, and take a closer look at the process.
“GreedFall 2’s universe is vast, and its different biomes call for contemplation, exploration, and mystery. Behold the lush forests of Teer Fradee, Thynia’s Mediterranean climate, and Olima’s Byzantian architecture – all serve as inspiration to the VFX team who use them to breathe life into the world around you.”
However, environment is not the only element that requires special effects. Combat uses it extensively as well, applying VFX to abilities and statuses. Before working on the more creative side of things, first you have to answer some questions. Are the effects of alterations and spells cumulative – how are they prioritised and how can they be made visually comprehensible? Such are the questions that can arise before embarking on a VFX project.
Magic is another field where VFX speaks for itself. The natives’ magic draws from nature, while that used in Thélème is ethereal and plays on light and shadow.
