If you grew up in the ‘80s glued to Saturday morning cartoons, chances are you know the words “By the power of Grayskull” better than your own Social Security number. Now, Mattel and Limited Run Games are tapping into that nostalgia vein with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, a side-scrolling beat ‘em up that looks like it just leapt out of your childhood VHS collection.
Unveiled during Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2025, the game is being developed by Bitmap Bureau. The studio previously delivered Final Vendetta and Terminator 2D: No Fate. If that track record is any indication, expect a love letter to the arcade brawler era with enough modern polish to keep it from feeling like it has been sitting in Snake Mountain’s basement since 1987.
Set for a 2026 release on console and PC, Dragon Pearl of Destruction puts players in control of their favorite He-Man characters. You can play as He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and more, with each character bringing their own signature moves and abilities as you punch, kick, and sword-swipe your way through a dozen stages of Skeletor’s minions. The ultimate goal is to stop Skeletor and Evil-Lyn from completing an ancient ritual that could plunge Eternia into darkness. You know, just another Tuesday night on Eternia.
Mattel is billing Dragon Pearl of Destruction as both a tribute to longtime fans and a gateway for a new generation. Erika Winterholler, Mattel’s Head of Business Development for Digital Games, put it simply:
It’s a love letter to those who grew up with He-Man, combining nostalgic visuals with fast-paced, modern gameplay.
Translation: the game is designed to make middle-aged fans feel like kids again while giving today’s players something more exciting than clunky licensed tie-ins of the past.
Josh Fairhurst, CEO of Limited Run Games, was equally enthusiastic, saying, “Dragon Pearl of Destruction is the Masters of the Universe arcade game I yearned for as a child.” Same, Josh. Same. With chunky pixel art, authentic 1980s-inspired visuals, and a roster of fan-favorite characters, Dragon Pearl of Destruction looks like the kind of game that would have eaten all of your quarters if it had actually been released during the arcade boom. Instead, we will just be spending our grown-up money on physical pre-orders when they open in early 2026.
So sharpen your Power Swords, polish your armor, and maybe work on your Skeletor laugh. Eternia is calling. This time, it arrives in glorious 16-bit spirit, with digital and physical pre-orders coming in early 2026.
