Masters Of The Universe: Legends Unite Heads to Luna Day-and-Date With the Movie

Amazon is leaning all the way into synergy this summer. Amazon and Mattel have announced Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite, a new couch co-op game launching June 5 on Amazon Luna. That date isn’t random. It lines up exactly with the theatrical release of the new Masters of the Universe film, giving fans the rare opportunity to watch and play on the same day. It’s a smart move, and honestly, one that feels a little overdue. If you’re going to revive a franchise that’s been around for more than 40 years, you might as well go all in.

Legends Unite isn’t trying to be a massive open-world adaptation or a cinematic tie-in. Instead, it takes a more social approach. The game blends roguelike deck-building with arcade-style mini-games, designed specifically for couch co-op sessions. Every run is different, with players teaming up to build decks, power up their characters, and push back against Hordak and his forces.

There’s also a bit of friendly chaos mixed in. While cooperation is key, certain mini-games introduce competitive elements, where players can snag bonuses or sabotage each other for an edge. It sounds like the kind of system that starts as teamwork and slowly turns into “every hero for themselves” by the end of the night.

As part of Luna’s GameNight lineup, Legends Unite is built for living room sessions using devices people already own. TVs handle the main display, while smartphones double as controllers. No console required, no downloads, just jump in and start playing. It’s clearly targeting a more casual, social audience rather than the usual hardcore crowd.

That said, there’s still some depth under the hood. Adventure Mode lets players build stronger decks over time, tackle different biomes, and unlock new abilities. The roster pulls from across the franchise, mixing the upcoming film’s designs with deeper cuts from Eternia’s history. For longtime fans, that’s probably the real draw. Not just He-Man and Skeletor, but the wider bench of characters that have been floating around since the 80s.

Included with Prime at no additional cost, Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite will be available across multiple regions at launch. Whether it ends up being a party night staple or a one-week curiosity is another question, but as far as franchise tie-ins go, this is at least doing something a little different.

Old enough to have played retro games when they were still cutting edge, Mitch has been a gamer since the 70s. As his game-fu fades (did he ever really have any?), it is replaced with ever-stronger, and stranger, opinions. If that isn't the perfect recipe for a game reviewer, what is?
