Meow Wolf has teamed up with Exalted Funeral and Genuine Entertainment to launch TAVERS: The Meow Wolf Roleplaying Game, a portal-hopping tabletop RPG now live on Kickstarter. Set across the surreal, dimension-bending worlds Meow Wolf is known for, TAVERS casts players as interdimensional travelers who harness “Source,” a wellspring of creative energy that allows them to open portals and rewrite reality itself. If that sounds appropriately chaotic, that is the point.
Unlike traditional tabletop RPGs built around rigid stats and carefully balanced systems, TAVERS leans into instability. Skills fluctuate alongside your memories, which can be created, traded, shared, or even discovered in the wild. Managing abilities and items becomes a mini-game of its own, reinforcing the idea that nothing in this universe stays fixed for long.
The storytelling structure mirrors a Meow Wolf exhibit. Rather than guiding players down a straight narrative path, TAVERS uses an “exquisite corpse” style approach where each player can influence not only their character but the direction of the story itself. The design encourages improvisation, collaborative chaos, and the kind of weird discoveries that feel found rather than handed out.
The Kickstarter campaign includes a range of physical and digital rewards. The core rulebook will be available in digital, standard physical, and deluxe editions, featuring cover art by Tradd Moore and interior work from artists including Jesse Jacobs, Jamiyla Lowe, and Jordan Speer. Inside, players will find new and familiar faces from across Meow Wolf’s exhibitions, plus five story arcs co-developed with the company. The finale stars Nimsekaiju, Meow Wolf’s transdimensional hamster, now scaled up into full kaiju form.
For collectors and game night maximalists, the Quantum Parabox bundles the core rulebook with custom dice, tokens, and character sheets. Additional add-ons include the Mem-Maker Kit for larger parties, the Taver Toolkit Refill Pack with pre-generated characters and bonus materials, a vinyl LP soundtrack mixed by Meow Wolf with gameable content, and an oversized 80mm Nimsekaiju miniature.
The campaign also offers experiential perks. Fifty top-tier backers will receive two invite-only Preview Week tickets to Meow Wolf’s upcoming Los Angeles exhibition before it opens to the public. All backers will receive an exclusive discount code for Meow Wolf exhibition tickets.
Meow Wolf describes itself as a universe rather than a set of locations. With TAVERS, that universe moves from physical installations into living rooms and game shops. If the Kickstarter momentum holds, fans won’t just visit these worlds. They will build new ones.
