Steve Jackson Games is gearing up to launch Munchkin Second Edition on BackerKit, kicking off a new chapter for the iconic dungeon-delving card game nearly 25 years after its original release. Fans can now visit the BackerKit page to sign up for launch notifications, preview playtest rules, and join thousands of others eagerly awaiting the campaign’s debut. The funding campaign is set to go live today, January 22, at 2pm EST.
Munchkin has been a staple of game nights since its debut, combining light-hearted fantasy combat with chaotic player interactions and trademark humor. The Second Edition aims to refine and refresh that experience while keeping the spirit of the original firmly intact. Early details from the BackerKit landing page outline a slew of enhancements. Setup and gameplay are expected to be quicker, card and box art has been updated by original artist John Kovalic, and the edition introduces Gold Pieces — a new in-game currency players can use to bribe rivals or make change. A set of reference cards will help streamline play, reducing the need to constantly pass a rulebook around.
The boxed game will include everything needed for play, including a game board, 150 door/treasure cards, standees, bases, cardboard Gold Pieces, a custom die, and instructions for using First Edition cards with the new ruleset. An Upgrade Kit will also be available for owners of Munchkin Big Box, allowing them to integrate older components with Second Edition mechanics.
Stretch goals are part of the upcoming campaign as well, with backers expected to unlock extras like a printable dice tower file and upgrades for the Munchkin Level Counter app. The launch of Munchkin Second Edition through BackerKit is a highlight of what Steve Jackson Games is calling “The Year of Munchkin,” leading up to the franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2026.
For fans of backstabbing friends and snatching treasure, this new edition promises a fresh, faster, and more polished way to play one of tabletop gaming’s most enduring classics. Prelaunch sign-ups are open now, with the campaign expected to go fully live shortly.
