Developers of sports games are in a tricky position. The games must evolve every year to avoid players asking, “Is this just a data update?” As much as basketball, football, and soccer fans want to see the latest rosters updated, they also want significant progress in gameplay, graphics, online play, and game modes. NBA 2K26 landed in a respectable place. More than respectable, you could argue: its current Metacritic “metascore” is 82. It has good gameplay, a variety of modes, and the realistic style that the series is known for.
But it didn’t quite reach the series’ heights. Earlier NBA 2K titles felt fresher and set a high bar for creativity and cultural impact. The almost universally loved NBA 2K12, for example, is in the echelons of great sports games. Can Visual Concepts realistically predict that bar with the next edition?
The NBA 2K series
Although it might not be huge, the gap between NBA 2K26 and earlier classics is significant. NBA 2K1 has a huge Metacritic score of 93, a level of acclaim that a sports series might reach once every couple of decades. That classic was praised for its graphics, motion capture, and realistic feel on the Dreamcast. For the time, its gameplay did a great job of mirroring real basketball, and it was one of the most convincing sports simulations of its time.
The next decade, NBA 2K12 was raved about for its gameplay and the mode celebrating legendary players and classic NBA moments.
Compared to those highs, NBA 2K26 sits lower with a Metacritic score in the low 80s. The game is well-liked. But it’s not groundbreaking. Although any developer could argue it’s hard to break ground when a series is 27 years old. Way back when, IGN called the first NBA 2K “very impressive” despite the gameplay being a “bit glitchy”.
Developer
NBA 2K has long been developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. Their design philosophy focused heavily on simulation basketball and broadcast-style presentation.
That approach separated the series from its rivals. EA Sports produced the NBA Live series, which leaned more toward accessibility and arcade-style pacing. Even when EA aimed for realism, the gameplay often felt different in tone.
Visual Concepts built NBA 2K around detailed player animations, tactical depth, and broadcast authenticity. EA typically prioritized quick pick-up gameplay and flashy presentation.
Those featuring realism lean towards 2K. Players can control all the big NBA franchises, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, and Miami Heat. Player ratings are regularly updated according to how they perform in real life. Nikola Jokic was upgraded to 98 OVR in February. Jokic’s Denver Nuggets are considered one of the favorites for the NBA Championship this season. The top California sports betting sites consider Oklahoma City, Jokic’s Nuggets, and San Antonio Spurs to be among the frontrunners. It’s always interesting to see how these real-life odds and qualities are reflected in the game, as many gamers will have found that the league favourite can act very strangely in-game and never quite dominate as they should. That being said, Jokic’s dominance on every court around the country, as well as on the 2K courts, is accurately reflected by both odds and video game mechanics.
The gameplay in 2K is still more detailed. Shooting mechanics, dribbling systems, and defensive positioning are all tweaked each year. TV-style commentary, realistic arenas, and player likenesses contribute to the game’s authenticity. The game modes – MyCareer, MyNBA, and MyTeam – provide different ways to interact with the league. MyCareer is widely regarded as the best in years. The microtransactions and overpriced packs have been criticized.

A solid entry
NBA 2K26 didn’t fail. By most measures, it’s still a strong sports game with deep gameplay and polished presentation. Most players were happy with the update, but weren’t amazed. But how many sports games are truly amazing now? Soccer fans have enjoyed EA FC this year, but not many of them are comparing it to International Superstar Soccer 98 or FIFA 12 in a list of all-time greats. When a franchise has produced classics like NBA 2K1 and NBA 2K12, a new entry has to do something really special to stand out.
