Netflix Witcher Series is Packing Big Name Firepower

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that it would be bringing a live action series based on The Witcher to small screens. We haven’t heard much since then, but Game Informer is reporting that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is writing the script. You may recognize the name if you’ve watched Netflix’s other blockbuster Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s The Defenders.

Sean Daniel (The Expanse) will  be sharing executive production duties with Tomek Baginski and Jarket Sawko. The latter two were originally trying to make a movie based on The Witcher, but opted for a series instead.

The Witcher is a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski that has inspired several video games including the highly acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The books center around Geralt of Rivera, a Witcher who travels through his country hunting monsters. Other well-known characters include Yennefer of Vengerberg, Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, Triss Merigold and Dandelion.

We don’t really have any further information about when we might see the series debut but hopefully we will soon. Then it’ll be time to “Netflix and chill” for sure.

Will you be watching too?

The Witcher

Here’s what The Witcher Wikipedia has to say:

The stories are set on the Continent, which was settled several thousand years earlier by elves from overseas. When they arrived, the elves encountered gnomes and dwarves. After a period of war between the elves and dwarves, the dwarves retreated into the mountains and the elves settled in the plains and forests. Human colonists arrived about five hundred years before the events in the stories, igniting a series of wars. The humans were victorious, and became dominant; the non-human races, now considered second-class citizens, often live in small ghettos within human settlements. Those not confined to the ghettos live in wilderness regions not yet claimed by humans. Werewolves and vampires appeared after a magical event, known as the Conjunction of the Spheres.

During the centuries preceding the stories, most of the Continent’s southern regions have been taken over by the Nilfgaard Empire; the north belongs to the fragmented Northern Kingdoms. The Witcher saga takes place in the aftermath of the first major war between the Nilfgaard Empire and the Northern Kingdoms, with a second war beginning in the middle of the series.
