Pixel Arcadia Promises 90 Minutes of Retro Reveals, Surprise Launches, and Long-Lost Returns

Pixel Arcadia has announced its final plans ahead of its debut on August 24, and the new retro-focused showcase is promising more than the usual trailer marathon with a pixel-art logo at the end of the show. Organized by retro specialist marketing agency Pixel Helix, Pixel Arcadia: The Future of Retro will run for 90 minutes and feature announcements from more than 30 publishers and developers. The presentation will include world premieres, first gameplay looks, classic franchise revivals, and at least one game launching immediately during the broadcast.

That last point is particularly welcome. Showcases are often built around the idea that something exciting is on the way, eventually. There could be months of development and several more teaser trailers before any of the games actually release. Pixel Arcadia is promising that viewers will be able to get their hands on one newly revealed title right away.

The show’s world-premiere slate includes new games based on “long-lost icons” returning after decades, alongside reimagined entries in classic arcade series. Pixel Helix has not named the games involved, which is the right choice for an event built around reveals, though it also means retro players will have to wait a few more days before starting their usual detective work over suspiciously cropped screenshots.

Pixel Arcadia will be hosted by Hasraf “HaZ” Dulull, the independent developer and Beyond the Pixels creator, alongside longtime games presenter Dan Maher, also known as MrPointyHead and formerly of Inside Xbox.

The event’s timing is no accident. Airing immediately before gamescom, Pixel Arcadia is positioning itself as a dedicated stage for retro, classic, and retro-inspired releases at a time when larger industry showcases tend to devote most of their attention to blockbuster franchises and games that need a 15-minute cinematic trailer to explain a sword.

Viewers can watch through Twitch, YouTube, Steam, and GOG.com. The main presentation begins August 24 at 2 p.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. Pacific. A pre-show with additional reveals begins 30 minutes earlier, while Digital Foundry Retro will host a post-show discussion immediately after the event.

Old enough to have played retro games when they were still cutting edge, Mitch has been a gamer since the 70s. As his game-fu fades (did he ever really have any?), it is replaced with ever-stronger, and stranger, opinions. If that isn't the perfect recipe for a game reviewer, what is?
