Professor DM Shows Off Deathbringer TTRPG At Gen Con 2026

Deathbringer got a live Gen Con push this year, with Professor DM appearing at the show to promote the BackerKit campaign and show off the game in action. The event tied the crowdfunding campaign to a real-world demo, which is usually the best way to convince tabletop fans that a new RPG is more than just a pile of ominous fonts and cursed dice.

The Gen Con event, titled Deathbringer Live Play and Update, featured Professor DM alongside Stephen Glicker and Mark Seifter as they ran a short scenario and talked through the game. There was also a meet and greet scheduled at the BackerKit booth, which gave attendees a chance to chat, grab some swag, and see why this grim fantasy RPG had been pulling attention on the crowdfunding side.

For readers who have not been following the campaign, Deathbringer is a dark fantasy tabletop RPG built around brutal survival, lethal combat, and old-school style play. It is designed to work with Shadowdark and other OSR games with fast rules, deadly consequences, and a world where heroism is often measured by how long you can avoid becoming a cautionary tale.

That pitch has clearly landed. The project launched on BackerKit in July, funded quickly, and continued building momentum as convention season gave it a bigger spotlight. If you had been curious about what makes Deathbringer different from a standard fantasy RPG, the Gen Con showcase should have helped answer that without requiring you to decode a 200-page rulebook just to learn whether the goblins are, in fact, extremely serious about killing you.
