The free-to-play launch of Rocket League will be coming along later in 2020. In a new blog post, developers speak about several topics relating to the F2P transition, most notably surrounding the “paywall” that PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch players have faced if they wanted to participate in multiplayer games. The development team has announced that when the F2P version launches, subscriptions to PlayStation Plus and Switch Online will no longer be required.
The post also laid out some more details about what players can expect with the major overhaul to the game:
- Rocket Pass, Competitive Seasons, and Tournaments will now follow the same schedule with uniform start and end dates.
- New Competitive Ranks are being added including Grand Champion 1, Grand Champion 2, and Grand Champion 3, as well as Supersonic Legend which becomes the new highest competitive rank.
- A soft reset of all ranks will be part of the update.
- The New Player Experience is being added along with New Driver Challenges. These will help new players immerse themselves in the game and be able to unlock items for their collections.
- The PC version will now be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
- New Quick Chats are being added.
There is still no precise word on when the F2P conversion will begin, though devs did say that some updates will begin rolling out in mid-September. When the F2P version will officially unlock remains unknown.
