Samsung to Unveil “Project Moohan” Mixed Reality Headset at World Wide Open Event

Samsung is officially bringing its long-teased XR ambitions to life. At the “Worlds Wide Open” Galaxy event on October 21, the company will unveil Project Moohan, a mixed reality (XR) headset built on the new Android XR platform. According to Samsung, Moohan is the “first product built for the open and scalable Android XR platform,” blending immersive capabilities with everyday usability.

Rumors are already swirling about how Moohan could stack up against the Meta Quest 3 and the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. While nothing is final until the announcement, leaks and early previews offer a tantalizing peek into what Samsung might bring to the XR arena.

What We (Might) Expect: Leaked Specs & Rumors

Because Samsung’s been tight-lipped, a lot of what we know so far comes from leaks and industry coverage, but the picture is getting sharper.

Multiple sources suggest Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 as the likely brains beneath the headset. That aligns with Samsung’s previous partnerships with Qualcomm for XR development. Leaks also hint at Sony-sourced 1.3″ micro-OLED 4K-class displays in each eye. Moohan is expected to use a multimodal input system: eye tracking, hand gestures, voice commands, plus traditional XR controllers. There’s also speculation about six front-facing cameras, depth sensors, and spatial audio.

On the memory side of things, a leaked benchmark reportedly lists 16 GB of RAM, a figure that would put Moohan on par with or ahead of many current headsets. Leaks point to a weight of around 545 grams, making it competitive with rivals. We are also expecting a battery life of roughly 2 hours in general use, or about 2.5 hours of video playback.

Why This Matters – Moohan vs. Quest 3 and Vision Pro

Samsung is entering the ring between two established XR players: Meta and Apple. The Quest 3 is more affordable and well-established, while Vision Pro aims for high-end spatial computing with a hefty price tag. Moohan may attempt to split the difference: premium features with (hopefully) more sensible pricing.

Android XR is one of Moohan’s key differentiators. It’s designed to be an open, scalable ecosystem for XR devices, integrating Google’s Gemini AI and enabling more flexibility and cross-device compatibility. If Samsung executes well, Moohan could attract users who want more than the closed ecosystems of Apple and seek more polish than budget headsets. That said, challenges loom: app support, developer adoption, and price expectations are major hurdles.

For gamers, Project Moohan could mark a major turning point in how immersive worlds are experienced. Samsung’s entry into the XR market brings real competition to Meta and Apple. That’s good news for players. A headset powered by Android XR means more open access to game developers, potential cross-platform integration with existing Android titles, and a far more flexible ecosystem than the walled gardens of other brands. If Samsung can leverage its display and hardware expertise to deliver smooth visuals, low latency, and strong performance, we could see a new wave of AAA-quality mixed-reality gaming experiences. Whether it’s tactical shooters with real-world movement or RPGs that blend digital and physical exploration, Moohan could push the next big leap in interactive entertainment. Simply put, Moohan could put gamers right at the center of their worlds.

Samsung’s October 21 event is shaping up to be a defining moment for XR. The company is promising not just a headset, but “a new era of multimodal AI.” Whether Moohan will live up to that hype remains to be seen. But with leaks mounting and the Android XR platform poised to go live, this could be one of the most important headsets we see in 2025.
