Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew studio Mimimi, is shutting down, according to a blog posted on the official blog last night., but it’s not because of money.
In an era where buyouts and big budget layoffs are common in gaming, it’s pretty normal to see a studio cease production. It’s maybe not so common for it to happen in the way it did with Mimimi Studio. The outfit behind Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is winding down in order to focus on the team’s mental health.
In a post on the official website and social media, Managing Directors of the company Dominik and Johannes state that,
“dedicating the past decade and a half of our lives working on increasingly ambitious games took a heavy personal toll on us and our families. After the release of Shadow Gambit, we decided it was the right time to prioritize our well-being and to pull the brakes instead of signing up for another multi-year production cycle.”
This doesn’t mean you should hold off shelling out for the latest Shadow gambit. There’s already confirmation that the latest title from Mimimi will continue to get ongoing support, updates, and new content. Simply that the next few months will be something of a transition for the studio and its employees.
With a recent run of games published by the likes of Daedalic Entertainment and THQ, you probably might have something by Mimimi in your Steam catalog. While it is never great to hear about layoffs, the role of mental health in the gaming industry is all too often ignored, so it’s encouraging to see the studio leads know when to call it quits.
