Developer Lavapotion is back with another look at the upcoming Roots DLC for turn-based strategy Songs of Conquest. The team explains that this faction has been growing beneath the surface for a long time, having been on their minds for over seven years.
The Roots are ancient sentient colonies of flora, fungus, and the bones of dead heroes repurposed to serve the relentless expansion of the Wyldwoods. Grow your might, and spread your roots in five new conquest maps. Learn the ancient secrets of the forest. Command nine new Wielders, dead creatures, now infested and alive under the control of the Tree Mothers.
The Roots do not consist of individuals with their own ambitions. They share a single mind, a collective consciousness that drives their relentless push to spread the Wyldwoods. They are also a very visually unique faction. The developers wanted to inspire the sense of dread, disgust, and strangeness while still being beautiful and full of splendor.
The devs outlined a couple of units that are their favorite:
- Fungi & Spawn. Swarms, or clusters of fungi, form the backbone of any Root army. They are weak but cheap, and with the right research, you can field them in massive numbers, overwhelming stronger foes with sheer swamp-like mass. In battle, they provide their Vessel Wielders with creation essence. Their evolved form, the Spawn, spreads a poisonous cloud around them, slowly wearing down anything that threatens the Tree Mothers.
- Broken Vessel & Blighted Vessel. In their attempts to create Wielders, or Vessels as the Roots call them, they use humanoid remains found in their lands or after battle. They try to capture the last flicker of life and forge something new.
