Sword Art Online Variant Showdown Dives Onto Mobiles During 2022

Bandai Namco has confirmed that the upcoming anime spin-off Sword Art Online Variant Showdown is set to hit mobiles across the globe later this year.

Roughly ten years after we first dived into the Sword Art Online anime, fans of the Kirito and co will be able to pick up and play Sword Art Online Variant shadow later this year. Bandai Namco jsut dropped the news that we can expect a simultaneous worldwide release of the latest Sword Art Online title, with an added teaser trailer for eager fans of the series.

Following on from the original tale of the infamous swordsman, Variant Showdown will be available on the go and continues Kirito’s online escapades. Set sometime after previous titles, Kirito hears of a game called Cross Edge. Supposedly designed by a middle school genius, two rumors accompany it. The first: There’s a mysterious player who attacks out of nowhere. Losing to them means losing a portion of your own memories. The second: This player sounds suspiciously like a Laughing Coffin member.

The game, which will be available on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, is set to be free to play with in app purchases and is described by Bandai Namco as an ‘action’ adventure. We don’t know a huge amount more about Varian Showdown, but fans of SAO will likely appreciate the tie-in to canon events and hopefully another opportunity to go toe to toe with some familiar enemies. You can check out the trailer above and head over to the official website to pre register. Until then, there’s plenty of time to catch up on the rest of the Sword Art Online titles on the market.
