In honor of Tolkien Reading Day, developer Wētā Workshop released a brand-new, charming behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings game. In it, you will be able to live the cozy life of a Hobbit in the serene landscape of the Shire, represented in all its comforting, familiar glory.
The video above provides a glimpse at how the game was uniquely designed based on Tolkien’s works, and how the team looked to his books first as the key inspiration for the game. If you have ever wondered about the themes of nature, community and the peaceful lifestyle, the developers share in great detail about their approach. The team also notes that keen-eyed players will be able to recognize iconic characters and families, locations, and other ‘easter eggs’. Have you found any?

In Tales of the Shire, you will be able to create your very own Hobbit and set forth in Bywater, helping the quaint little tower flourish. Decorate your own Hobbit hole, tend to the garden, fish at clear ponds, forage wild fruits and herbs, or trade with townsfolks. You will even be able to prepare homemade meals to share with fellow Hobbits. Discover the wonders each new day brings to Bywater as you settle into your serene homestead for much-needed rest.
The game will arrive on July 29, 2025.
