Koei Tecmo Games presented a brand-new trailer for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly remake on Tokyo Game Show 2025. In this short video, developers tell about the development of the project and gameplay. While the developers have yet to reveal more, the presentation captured the remake’s core, offering a compelling glimpse into its gameplay and unsettling atmosphere.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake promises to reintroduce the chilling tale from 2003 to a new generation of players. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who become lost and separated in a deeply haunted, abandoned village known as the “Lost Village.” The setting is plagued by vengeful spirits tied to a dark ritual. The player’s only defense against the supernatural is the Camera Obscura capable of revealing and sealing away the malevolent ghosts that lurk in the shadows.
The highly anticipated remake of Fatal Frame 2 introduces fully refreshed graphics and a meticulously refined sound system. Advanced post-processing techniques elevate the original’s haunting atmosphere to new heights, intensifying the sense of unease for both players and characters. Key locations have received special attention, with an enhanced lighting system and deeper, more dynamic shadows adding layers of dread to every environment.
Furthermore, the developers have completely reworked the iconic Camera Obscura gameplay, refining the core ghost-fighting mechanics to make the entire experience more immersive and visceral.
The Remake will launch in 2026, though the developers have not yet revealed system requirements.
